Clifton coast home

CLIFTON enjoyed a one-sided victory in their Twenty-20 game at Monton and Weaste to set themselves up for the next stage of the competition.

The hosts managed only one boundary in the entire innings and succumbed to 76 all out on the last ball of the 20 overs.

The Clifton win inside 12 overs for the loss of a single wicket was a formality, leaving things nicely set for the next encounters against Unsworth (June 15) and Radcliffe on Friday, June 22.

The games start at 6pm and there will be a barbeque and entertainment provided - so get down to the ground for a great family night out.

Meanwhile, Clifton's first XI nearly came back from the dead to grab an unlikely win at Unsworth on Saturday, June 9.

The home side raced to 200-1 with 16 overs left, but finished on a less daunting 293-7.

In reply, Chris Lord and Hiranthe Wijesinghe both scored opening half centuries for Clifton as did Gary Garner.

Qaiser Malik then weighed in with some lusty blows in his 43, but when he and Gary Garner both went to catches in the deep, the late order huffed and puffed to 268-9.

The seconds carried the flag with Geoff Griffiths (88) and Ian Morris (68) helping to post a total in excess of 200. Unsworth then folded to 140 all out, with 16-year-old David Dempster plundering four wickets.

Clifton thirds found bogey team Rochdale impossible to beat yet again.

Batting first, stalwart Phil Royle scored 88 in a final total of 206-7, but Dave Rogers limped out of the action after two overs and despite a valiant effort from the other bowlers an exciting match was lost by just one wicket.
