CRICKET: CLIFTON'S first and second teams booked a double date in the second round of their respective cup competitions on Sunday at the expense of high-flying Crompton.

The first team set a daunting target of 270 runs in the first round of the Wood Cup with their professional Chinthaka Jayasinghe falling just two runs short of what would have been a majestic and well deserved century.

Jayasinghe also shone with the ball, taking four wickets for 24 runs as Clifton recorded a 146-run success.

Other all rounders to make telling contributions were Qaiser Malik, 28 runs and 3-11, and Nick Kennedy, 32 runs and 2-10.

Clifton will meet Oldham, who were surprise winners at Littleborough, in the next round.

Clifton's second team produced an impressive all round team performance to win their cup game with Crompton seconds by 34 runs.

Ian Morris amassed 83 runs with the bat while Richard Borrit took three wickets with the ball.

Clifton's first and second teams also played league games with Milnrow at the weekend.

A brave innings from Gary Garner, who was unbeaten on 66 runs, helped to rescue a point for the first team, who were tormented by Karl Brown.

The former Atherton starlet and son of ex-Clifton professional Paul Brown hit 90 runs and took some vital wickets in the Lake Garage Central Lancashire League clash.

It was a similar story for the depleted second string. Liam Dorsey's 61 runs was the only high spot as Clifton's 173-9 was eclipsed with six wickets and lots of overs to spare.
