John bags a brace on return for City

Salford City 3
Chadderton 1

SALFORD City had a smooth passage into the quarter-finals of the North West Counties League Cup at Moor Lane on Saturday.

Second Division opponents Chadderton put up spirited resistance against the cup holders, closing down quickly in midfield and dropping back in numbers to help out their defence. But they rarely caused City problems as an attacking force.

Buoyed by the return from suspension of John Robinson, Salford took the lead on six minutes when his strike partner Nick Robinson caught visiting keeper Lee Swanson unawares with an overhead kick into the bottom corner.

Twenty minutes later John Robinson displayed his predatory instincts when he cut through the Chaddy defence inside the penalty box to hammer an unstoppable shot past Swanson.

Mattie Burke had a sweetly struck volley tipped over the bar and John Robinson had a header clawed off the goal line by Swanson.

But Chadderton trailed by only one goal at the break as Gary Wright made no mistake when a free kick deflected perfectly into his path off Salford's defensive wall.

Salford had full control of the game in the second half and only good defending and some weak finishing kept their goal tally down.

Tunji Moses somehow missed from six yards out, Swanson made a great save from Mattie Eckersley and a header from centre half Andy Watson looked to have been hacked away having already crossed the goal line.

John Robinson finally finished off a gallant Chadderton team with a fine drive past Swanson from twelve yards out.

Salford have been drawn at home to in-form Curzon Ashton in the quarter-finals but next up is a visit to fellow first division high-flyers Maine Road in the North West Counties League. The game will kick-off at 3pm on Saturday, February 3.

Meanwhile, City's youth team continue to do well. They beat Prescot Cables 2-1 on Sunday with Richard Dunn scoring both of their goals.
