SALFORD City's title hopes took a turn for the worse on Saturday when they suffered an unexpected defeat to mid-table Glossop North End.

With FC United not playing at the weekend, City still hold a three-point cushion at the top of the North West Counties League first division table. But FC now have six games in hand on the Moor Lane outfit.

The elements contributed to a dour struggle on Saturday. The windy conditions gave City the upper hand in the first half but Glossop held the advantage in the second.

And, having taken the lead via a brave close range header from Lee Evans shortly after the break, the visitors held on for what was a deserved victory.

Keeper Jason Gorton, who was making his Glossop debut, made good saves to thwart Jamie Baguley, Mattie Burke and Nick Robinson.

But it was Salford's Andy Moores who was the busier of the two keepers.

He made a great save from Andy Levendis, who later hit the crossbar.

Baguley constantly probed down the wings for Salford but without the suspended John Robinson their front line made little impact.

Salford defend their League Cup crown in a third round tussle with second division Chadderton on Saturday, January 27. The Moor Lane game will kick-off at 3pm.

Meanwhile, City's youth team lifted the club's spirits when they came from behind to defeat Woodley Sports 3-2 in the North West Youth Alliance on Sunday.

City's goals were scored by Mo Hussein, Craig Flowers and Lathan Forrester.
