City still top
27/12/2006
FOOTBALL: A WIN and a draw in Christmas week maintained Salford City's lead over FC United in the battle for the North West Counties first division football title.
City were down to 10 men for the last 35 minutes against Newcastle Town on Saturday but goals by Andy Watson, Dale Whitehead and Tommy Turner (2) gave them a 4-3 win.
There was frustration for City on Boxing Day, however. Maine Road's goalkeeper produced a stunning display and Salford had to settle for a 3-3 draw.
Watson (2) and Nick Robinson netted for City, who are three points ahead of FC having played four games more.
City manager Gary Fellows said: "We're top and we expect to stay there and win the league. That's a big statement to live up to I know. But I have faith in my lads and I honestly believe that, player for player, we are far superior to FC United."
City face two away games this week. They travel to Flixton on Saturday, December 30, kick-off 3pm, and visit St Helens Town on Wednesday, January 3, kick-off 7.45pm.
