Hot streak halted!

SALFORD City's eight match winning run was halted following a below par performance at home to Colne on Tuesday night.

They lost the North West Counties first division clash 3-1 and are now 11 points behind runaway leaders FC United in fourth place.

John Robinson got City back on level terms midway through the first half when he unleashed a low drive into the bottom corner of Colne's net.

The turning point came on the hour mark. City's Andy Pendlebury was sent off for a foul on Michael Cruz and Steve Cunningham made no mistake with the resulting penalty kick.

City will be hoping to return to winning ways when they travel to fellow first division high flyers Maine Road in the second qualifying round of the FA Vase competition on Saturday, September 23.

The match will kick-off at 3pm. Should it end in a draw, the replay will be held at Moor Lane from 7.45pm on Tuesday, September 26.

Salford came into the Colne game on the back of a 3-0 win against Nelson on Saturday and a 4-2 midweek success against Silsden.

Salford were the dominant side against Nelson.

They had plenty of opportunities to improve their goal difference tally.

City's first two goals came from long range.

Sean Whitehead's low drive took the home goalkeeper completely by surprise, arrowing into the net from 35 yards out. And Mattie Burke almost broke the rigging with his viciously struck free kick from outside the box.

Mattie Eckersley wrapped up the win with a fine left-footed finish.

Nick Robinson had earlier seen a shot come back off the woodwork but he had better luck in front of goal against Silsden.

He gave City the lead after three minutes and netted again 11 minutes later to put them 3-0 ahead.

His namesake John Robinson was on target on nine minutes and Eckersley again rounded off the scoring late on.

Meanwhile, City's youth team needed extra-time to see off Woodley Sports in the North West Youth Alliance Open Cup.

They prevailed 4-2 with Mo Hussein bagging a hat-trick and Richard Dunn also netting.
