City miss out on promotion

AN impressive season ended in disappointment for Salford City.

They were edged out by North West Counties first division champions Cammell Laird and missed out on promotion due to unfavourable Football Association restructuring.

The FA last week decided that only three teams will be promoted to the UniBond first division.

And Salford City's defeat to Cammell Laird on Friday night confined them to a fifth-placed finish.

City beat Cammell Laird in the League Cup final recently.

And they certainly had their chances to end their season on a winning note on Friday.

They looked the better side in the second half but had no luck in front of goal and Cammell Laird came out on top thanks to a Ronnie Morgan penalty on 15 minutes.

John Robinson went close to scoring before the outstanding Morgan netted the goal that was to secure Cammell Laird's championship glory.

Robinson also had a good chance to score in the second half while Andy Pendlebury had one header cleared off the line and saw another go inches wide of the post.

Salford's players looked distraught at the final whistle but they should not be too disheartened.

They have done themselves proud in Gary Fellows' first year as manager.

They have played some great football and the experience gained should stand Salford's relatively young team in good stead for next season.
