INSTRUCTOR Ricky Birchall was beaming with pride after three of his students won trophies at the Amateur Martial Arts North West Open Tournament.

The tournament in Bury attracted international competitors from all over Great Britain but that did not stop Soul Whittle, Rebecca Horton and Sean Towey from achieving podium finishes.

The Ken-Yu Kai they are taught at Eccles Karate Club held them in good stead against numerous other forms of karate.

Soul, aged 10, came third in the under-16s senior kata (self defence movements).

Eleven-year-old Rebecca also finished third. She competed in the under-16s ninth kyu to fourth kyu kata section.

And Sean, aged 17, was runner-up in the adult under 65 kilos senior kumite (fighting) category.

Eccles Karate Club instructor Ricky, who is a sixth dan black belt, said: "For all three of them to win something in such a high standard tournament is a great achievement. I am delighted with them."
