Travis rescues 999 team

WALKDEN firefighter Nigel Travis is used to coming to the rescue.

So it was hardly surprising that the amateur fighter came up trumps when posed with the challenge of securing victory for the combined 999 services boxing team. The 34-year-old extinguished the hopes of the Army's elite by avenging last year's narrow points defeat to middleweight amateur champion Colin Jones.

Travis wrapped up victory in the first round to give the 999 side a 5-3 success in front of a packed house at the Park Lane Hilton Hotel. A mixture of a thunderous uppercut and an accidental clash of heads resulted in a gaping gash above Jones' right eye and the referee decided to stop the fight.

Travis was delighted to come out on top in his 104th senior bout but he expects the nature of the victory to lead to a second rematch.

He said: "There's unfinished business there. He's a tough kid and I honestly couldn't tell you if it was the uppercut or the clash of heads that caused the cut. I expect to have another dabble at him."

Travis, who trains with Amir Khan, Jamie Moore and Steve Foster Junior at Oliver Harrison's gym in Pendleton, will represent the 999 team against American opposition in London on Thursday, March 30.

And he hopes that another fight with Jones can be set up before that date.
