SALFORD City are celebrating a double whammy of impressive home wins.

They thrashed Bacup Borough 7-1 in the second round of the North West Counties League Cup on Tuesday.

And on Saturday they kept themselves in the North West Counties League's first division promotion hunt with a 1-0 win against fourth-placed Newcastle Town.

The net-busters on Tuesday, when City produced a dominant display to book a third round tie at Glossop in January, were Nick Robinson (2), Sean Whitehead, Jamie Baguley (2), Mattie Burke and John Borg. Barry Massay scored the only goal of the game on Saturday, latching onto Andy Pendlebury's long ball and steering the ball past the goalkeeper.

Massay's strength was a constant menace for Newcastle's defence.

Borg was prominent in the middle of the park, centre backs Andy Pendlebury and Anthony Snelgrove kept close tabs on the dangerous visiting strike force and the strong running of Jamie Baguley caused Newcastle all sorts of problems on his Salford debut.

City make the short trip to Abbey Hey on Saturday, December 10, kick-off 3pm. And on Tuesday, December 13, they take on Atherton Collieries at Moor Lane, kick-off 7.45pm.
