SALFORD-BORN boxer Lee Meager moved a step closer to getting a shot at Graham Earl's British lightweight title by beating Sheffield's Tony Montana in Nottingham on Friday.

Meager, aged 27, was hoping to turn Montana into Scarface but the Sheffield fighter proved to be a slippery customer.

After saying hello to Mearer's little friends - his left and right fists - Montana began a damage limitation exercise.

Montana's fine footwork enabled him to keep his distance.

But, just like his namesake in the classic Al Pacino gangster flick Scarface, there was to be no happy ending and Montana lost the eight-rounder on points.

Meager, who lived in Little Hulton before leaving home at the age of 18, said: "I was pleased with the win but I could have done better.

"My opponent wasn't there to be hit. He was constantly running and grabbing but I won every round and I'm now looking to challenge for the British lightweight title."

Meager, who lives in London, has won 18 of his 20 professional bouts to date and his only defeat came courtesy of a contentious points decision against Danny Hunt.

He may get the chance to avenge that defeat in the near future.

Meagre said: "Danny is fighting Dave Stewart in January and I should meet the winner of that in a final eliminator for the British lightweight title.

"A title shot is not far away for me now but I want to keep busy so I'll probably take a non-title fight in January or the middle of February."
