Mardle loses to three local players

WAYNE Mardle, the PDC ranked world number four, turned on the style at the Steelworks Club on Monday night when he took on challengers from the Irlam and Cadishead League.

'Hawaii 501' Mardle struck three 180s.

But the emphasis was on entertainment and the Essex man's showboating led to defeats to Peter Veldhoven, Lee Beardall and Veronica Pearce.

Mardle was at his best in a special best of three challenge with the league's individual champion - Dave Gleave. He beat him 2-0 in 16 and 14 darts.

Meanwhile, the first night of activity in the Little Hulton League saw St Edmunds Club draw with Shamrock and Pied Piper defeat Walkden British Legion 6-1 with the aid of Dave Collins' 180.

Bert Millership cracked in a 15-darter and Ken Mather had a 16-arrow leg of 501 as Morning Star recorded a 7-2 cup win against Moorside Farm in the Swinton 501 League.

Les Henderson's 17-darter helped Borough Social A defeat White Lion, who had a 180 via Darren Johnson.

Lee Millership's superb 12-darter on the log-end Manchester board inspired Morning Star to a Joseph Holts Eccles League success against Royal Oak.

Bridgewater recovered from a 3-1 deficit to preserve their unbeaten record in their match against White Lion A.

Brian Woodward won the decider.
