SALFORD City rewrote the history books when they out played UniBond League big guns Gateshead to record their best ever FA Cup result.

They progressed to the third qualifying round for the first time in front of 213 fans - the biggest gate at Moor Lane for many years.

City produced a professional performance despite missing both of their regular central defenders.

John and Nick Robinson performed exceptionally well after exchanging their usual attacking roles for central defensive berths.

And Salford scored the only goal of the game on 80 minutes when Andy McIntosh collected a John Borg pass, hit the byline and dinked the ball across the goal for oustanding winger Lee McNelly to head home.

The Tynesiders stormed forward in search of an equaliser and goalkeeper Ashley Timms was forced to make point blank saves from Paul Thompson and Michael Laws after a freekick had struck the post.

Bancroft had earlier hit the post for Salford, who will meet Farsley Celtic at home in the next round on Saturday, October 8, while Barry Massey and John Robinson both had spectacular overhead kicks cleared off the line.

Salford travel to Morpeth Town for an FA Vase second qualifying round tie on Saturday, October 1.
