Kidd rules out revenge mission

22/ 9/2005

SWINTON Lions coach Paul Kidd has ordered his troops to put all thoughts of revenge to the back of their minds when they travel to Workington for their second play-off eliminator on Sunday, September 25, kick-off 3pm.

Workington sent Swinton crashing out of the 2004 play-offs and the last meeting between the two sides saw Lions half back Ian Watson sidelined for six weeks with horrendous facial injuries following an alleged off the ball assault.

But Kidd says that gunning for revenge would only serve to hamper Swinton's bid to end Workington's 15-month unbeaten home record.

"We need to be focused and thoroughly professional", said Kidd. "If we don't fully concentrate on playing to the best of our ability then we'll have no chance.

"Workington have a fantastic home record but records are there to be broken.

"And if we play the whole game like we did in the second half against Hunslet at the weekend then we have a real chance of moving to within one game of the Grand Final."

Swinton are expected to recall Paul Southern and Dave Llewellyn to their squad on Sunday as they have recovered from their respective knee and groin injuries.

But Chris Maye will miss the game after dislocating his knee against Hunslet.

Kidd said: "We need a massive following at Workington. The fans really need to get behind the players because they deserve it!"

Swinton finished five points behind Workington in the National League Two table.

The Lions beat them 56-18 at home in April but they suffered a three-point defeat at Workington in July.

And Workington go into the game in fine form having trounced Gateshead 47-12 in their first play-off game at the weekend.

  • SUNDAY'S winners will play away to the losers of the Batley versus Dewsbury tie.
