Irlam lose their unbeaten record

THE race for the Irlam and Cadishead League first division heated up on Monday night when second-placed Railway moved to within one point of top spot by ending the unbeaten record of leaders Irlam Con Club A.

The top two battle in the second division saw White Lion Nomads beat Cadishead Lion 4-3 to move two points ahead of them and three other teams - Catholic Club A, Steelworks Club B and Tiger Moth.

Football suffered their first setback of the Swinton 501 League Division Two season. They lead the promotion race despite losing 6-3 to Britannia, who fired in 180s via Steve Waring and Warren Stackfield.

Joan Buckley fired in a maximum in Staff of Life B's 4-4 draw with Brackley Con Club while Andy Chase inspired Windmill to a 7-2 win at Swinton Con Club B.

In the first division, 180s came from White Swan's John Kelly and Cricketers' John Singleton but their teams lost to Swinton Legion and Farmers respectively.

Sunday's Stan Birch memorial knockout attracted more than 40 contestants at the Pied Piper in Little Hulton.

Ken Mather won the men's event, beating Lee Millership 4-1 in the final.

Diane Lee claimed the women's titlewith a 4-2 victory over Michaela Shaw.
