Salford Beechfield United moved into joint-second place in the Lancashire and Cheshire League Premier Division.

Despite a heavy pitch and blustery conditions both teams contrived to play flowing football. United made a great start and were 2-0 up inside the opening ten minutes thanks to goals by Jason Smith and man-of-the-match Steve Ellison.

United controlled the match for a brief period then Mellor came back strongly and Mark Oldham was on target to reduce the arrears to 2-1 at the interval.

In the second half Beechy enjoyed a greater spell of possession and Mike Gould netted goal number three after latching onto a wonderful pass from Little.

However, the visitors were back in it at 3-2 when Paul Swan scored from close range.

There were a few anxious moments for United until Little made it 4-2 from the penalty spot and, though Craig Frisby converted a spot kick awarded to Mellor in the dying minutes, United held on to take three valuable points.

Martin Blackshaw and Nick Marshall were on target in the second team's 2-2 draw with Mellor.

The thirds beat Old Ashtonians 7-1 in Division E. Scott Fisher (3), Tony Bennett (2) and man-of-the-match Sam Davies (2) netted.
