Moor trouble for City as they slip up at home

Salford City slipped to a third successive defeat in the North West Counties Division One at Moor Lane on Tuesday night.

City lacked the fluency and cutting edge necessary to punish the visitors, and it was Skelmersdale's ruthlessness in front of goal that proved the difference.

Skem took the lead after only five minutes with an impressive strike. City half cleared a corner, but the ball fell to Steve Hussey, who hit a 30 yard piledriver.

Salford responded to this setback, and Matty Barnes broke into the Skem penalty area to be challenged strongly by Robbie Holcroft, but the referee waved away penalty claims, and Barnes final lob was cleared off the line.

Damien Rooney remained the busier keeper, but Barnes enjoyed the best chance of the half, but Holcroftt saved with his legs.

The second period mirrored the first, with Skem once again having the better quality possession and chances, without ever really imposing themselves.

City battled gamely, but on 56 minutes, their hopes were dashed when Stuart Rudd made up for his earlier wastefulness with a crisp finish following good work down the left flank.

Jon Lyons powerful free-kick was tipped over represented Salford best chance.

City must now look to Saturday's home game with Bacup Borough to get back into winning ways.
