CITY of Salford swimming club celebrated one of their best year's ever in 2004 by becoming Northern Counties top club.

Salford has been awarded the honour after the combined points and medals from the Age, Youth and Senior Championships were totted up from last year.

And it completed a memorable double for the Broughton-based swimmers after they won the North West Speedo League title last December.

Chairman Ken Evans and Joe Gannon from the club attended the annual meeting in January when they were presented with the prestigious award and trophy. The last time Salford won the coveted prize was 1992.

John Stout, Salford swimming development officer and head coach, said: "This is a remarkable achievement and demonstrates our continued progress as a team."

The club continues to go from strength to strength after swimmers James Doolan, 14, and Katrina Alder, 13, were selected this week to represent England schools at the Home Nations Championship in Swansea next month. James was also picked last year.
