MEMBERS of Oakwood Sports Club are keeping their fingers crossed after receiving five nominations for the prestigious Salford Sports Council awards.
The Ellesmere Park club, for children with special needs and disabilities from the Salford area, had made great strides since it was set up 18 months ago.
And Oakwood's latest achievement could result in an impressive haul at a awards ceremony at Ellesmere Sports Club on Friday, February 11.
John Clark has been nominated for young disabled sports achiever of the year and, if successful, the 15-year-old will become the third Oakwood winner of the award in a row.
Also in the running are: Ben Cooper, volunteer in sport; Simon Mullineux, coach of the year; Michael Appleyard, outstanding contribution to sport; and Oakwood Sports Club, club of the year.
The winners then go on to represent Salford in the Greater Manchester sports award evening later this year.
It would cap a fantastic year for Oakwood, who had 11 boys in the Manchester United Ability Counts team which won the league, five of which were selected for the school of excellence.
The club provide a range of sporting opportunities including: football, athletics and water skiing, boccia and weekend multi-sports clubs, as well as developing close links with Manchester United and North Salford Gymnastics centre.
