Boardman suffer one Mell of a beating

BOARDMAN and Eccles skipper Nick Anderton is confident his side have enough points on the board to avoid relegation this season.

But goalkeeper Anderton is adamant his side must still try and finish the season on a high note, despite having no chance of winning any honours.

"It's important we look to finish the season out on a high," said Anderton, whose side were thumped 19-2 against Mellor on Saturday.

Boardman are the only team to have beaten Mellor this season, but their title-chasing Cheshire opponents were just too good courtesy of seven goals from Andy Pelletier, the talented American attacker, and further goals from Andy Etherington (3), Scott James (2), Andy Brickell (2), Dave Vickers (2), Tom Cunningham, Daniel Hodgson and Sam Davidson.

Neil Clarke and attacker Charlie Towers replied in vain for Boardman, but Anderton admitted his side were well beaten.

The Welbeck Road club will be hoping to bounce back against Cheadle on Saturday. The former double winners humbled Boardman 18-6 in November, but Anderton is looking forward to this weekend's contest.

"We've targeted games which we think we can win and although Cheadle are a good side, we will be looking to perform," said Anderton. "It's going to be tough, but you never know what might happen."

Boardman and Eccles B suffered a 19-4 defeat at the hands of Brooklands Hulmeians A in division three. The club's second-string host Ashton-under-Lyne on Saturday hoping to improve on their current position of seventh in the table.
