Schools make tracks

30/12/2004

YOUNGSTERS flocked to Cleavley's track for the Salford schools junior cross-country event.

The refurbished Winton arena, home to Salford Metropolitan Athletic Club, hosted the event when there was a double celebration for St Mark's after the Worsley school provided two winners in the youngest age group.

Benjamin Yates, 11, took the honours in the Year 6 boys' race, while 10-year-old Emma Thomas came home first in the girls' contest.

St Patrick's also recorded a double in the Year 7 events, K Sandlan and C Stewart coming home first.

Matthew Bell won the Year 8/9 boys' race, while Jane Hayes was first for the girls.

Jacqueline Fairchild from St Patrick's and Jonathan Yates (Walkden High) won the senior events.

Salford Mets have also had success this season, including the under-11s defending their Cheshire League title.

Cleavley's has now reopened with new facilities and the club, which runs teams from under-11s to under-17s, has experienced an influx of new members.

Anyone who would like to join the Salford Mets, who train on Mondays and Thursdays from 6.30pm, can contact Alan Cooper on: 0161 789 5741.
