Big Stef up in class

30/12/2004

KARL Harrison has named teenager Stefan Ratchford in his squad for the Reds' pre-season friendly with Swinton.

The 16-year-old loose forward will play some part of Sunday's eagerly-awaited warm-up game at the Willows. Wigan-born Ratchford impressed with the junior academy side and the Salford boss feels he is ready for first-team action.

"Stefan is a very promising player who could go all the way," said the Salford coach, who will also include his new signings in a 20-man squad. He came into the junior academy system last year and was the stand-out player. We need to have a look at him to see whether he can play at the next level. His age doesn't worry me because if you are good enough, you are old enough."

Harrison had originally intended to hand starts to several fringe players, but has opted for a more familiar line-up. Fans will be looking forward to see former Wigan starlets Luke Robinson and David Hodgson for the first time, while Ian Sibbitt and Stuart Dickens could play some part.

"A number of players have come up to me and said they want to play," added Harrison. "There are other players like Tim Jonkers who haven't played for a long time and need a run out. We've trained really hard for the last six weeks and are just really looking forward to a game.

"There is a lot of feeling and passion between the fans. We have good relations with Swinton and it's important the rivalry continues in games like these."

Salford are due to be boosted by the return of their overseas contingent - Sean Rutgerson, Cliff Beverley, Mark Shipway, Kevin McGuinness and new boy Junior Langi - but it is unlikely any will be risked. The five have all been taking part in pre-season with NRL clubs, with Rutgerson in particular impressing.

Harrison added: "Rutcho has excelled with Canberra. He has put weight on and is looking really good."
