THE Dover, champions of the Salford VIP Log-End League last season, began the defence of their title with an amazing 7-0 defeat at the hands of the Church.

The Pendleton outfit, runners-up to the Dover last time, obviously intend to go one better this season.

The White Horse drew level with the White Lion at the top of the Irlam and Cadishead League's first division with a 5-2 win over their rivals. The Cadishead Lion are top of the second, a point ahead of the White Horse B. The Lion beat Irlam Con Club B 7-0, while the White Horse beat White Lion Nomads.

There were some big finishes on the opening night of the Swinton 501 League. Mark Brabiner checked out 156 but his Swinton Con Club team lost 6-3 to the Lord Nelson, whose Pete Brown hit a fantastic 17-darter. Morning Star's Darren O'Neill took out 138 and 121 but his team lost 7-2 to Swinton Legion.

The first 180 of the campaign went to Folly's Don Greenalgh in their 6-3 win against Moorside Farm. Closest match of the night came at the Bowling Green where Swinton Cons B were the victors by the odd set in nine.

Swinton's Dawn Shaw was the only winner for the Lancashire GMC women's A team in their 5-1 defeat by Staffordshire. The B team drew 3-3.

The men's A won 7-5, while the B team also drew 3-3.
