City brought back to earth

27/11/2003

AFTER an impressive victory over high-flying Fleetwood, Salford City were disappointed to lose 2-0 at Atherton LR.

New manager Mark Molyneaux was in goal after his exploits in midweek and again chose to include a couple of new faces in the squad.

The first half was an even affair with neither side being able to create many chances. City's best opportunities came in the five minutes before half time when Scott Weir and Stuart Tulloch may have done better in front of goal.

In the second half Atherton gradually began to dominate and the visitors were indebted to a series of saves from Molyneaux.

But on 80 minutes the home side took the lead through a superb strike from substitute Jamie Cavanagh.

With ten minutes to go, Salford introduced a couple of substitutes and pushed forward in search of an equaliser but lacked the guile.

In the last minute, as City pushed forward, Atherton broke and substitute Ben Obong set up Gareth Strange to put the result beyond doubt.

City take on Congleton Town on Saturday and Bacup Borough on Tuesday, kick-off 7.45pm, both at Moor Lane.
