Double the trouble

ROYTON Town completed an Air Miles Manchester League league double over Irlam in a game the visitors felt they deserved something from.

The home side took the lead when Irlam failed to clear a free kick but the visitors hit back immediately through John Robinson, who, collecting an Alan Houghton through-ball, rounded the goalkeeper before slotting home.

Irlam were well on top and the hard-working Sean Whitehead put them ahead when he beat the offside trap and chipped the keeper. Irlam continued to press but were punished on the stroke of half-time when a long ball down the middle exposed their defence and Royton were level.

The second half was very tight but, with both teams giving little away, Royton took the lead from the penalty spot. Nick Robinson hit a post and Lee McNelly had a effort cleared off the line as Irlam searched in vain for the equaliser.

In the first division, Swinton Town were held 1-1 at home by Wythenshawe Town despite taking the lead through Leon Craven.

In the Lancashire Amateur Shield, Prestwich Heys were hot favourites to progress at Lytham St Annes, but made their customary exit to lower league opposition with a 4-3 defeat despite goals from Derek Watson and Brandon Jolly (2).
