Salford u15s foiled in cup final bid

SALFORD u15s' marvellous run in the English Schools' Wizards Trophy came to an end when they lost 4-2 after extra time of the semi-final at Cambridge.

It was a blow to Salford after they had led 2-1. They made a dramatic start when striker Mike Walker (Walkden) had the ball in the net but the effort was disallowed for an infringement.

Cambridge took a 10th-minute lead but Salford equalised 10 minutes later with a fine individual goal by Walker. Salford continued to push forward and were rewarded five minutes later when Walker grabbed his second with another individual effort.

Cambridge were level again five minutes into the second half and the teams proceeded to cancel each other out.

As Salford pressed for the winner Michael Tilley hit the bar, James Timmins (Irlam) hit the rebound against the upright and Scott Tunnicliffe (Swinton) fired the next rebound wide. The game went into extra time and Cambridge took advantage of the let-off with two goals in the first period.

Salford u15s switch their attentions to the Northern Merit League this weekend, taking on Leeds at Broughton on Saturday, (10.30am).

The u14s make it a double header, entertaining Leeds in a challenge match at the same venue on Saturday.

Greater Manchester u19s crashed out of the Premier League Trophy, losing 3-1 in the quarter-final to Shropshire at Lilleshall. England player Dale Johnson (Glossopdale High) scored the goal.
