Robertson jams City victory bid
27/ 3/2003
Salford City 1 Winsford United 1: AFTER three away games manager Chris Willcock brought his new-look City side to Moor Lane for the first time, but despite having most of the play they had to be content with a point.
Things would have been different but for some top-drawer saves by Andy Robertson when Salford piled on the pressure in the last 20 minutes.
Tommy Turner, recruited from Accrington Stanley, had City's best chance after only six minutes, bursting through only to see his shot cannon off Robertson's legs.
Most of the play centred around midfield, with former Blackburn Rovers trainee Liam Denning industrious for City, but high balls into the six-yard box did not overly trouble the keepers and despite having a few experienced players, Winsford struggled to create anything of real danger.
The second period followed the same pattern until the last quarter, when Salford stepped up a gear.
Graham Vaughan might have had more success on 70 minutes if he had tried to place the ball past Robertson but his shot rattled the underside of the bar before bouncing on the line and going clear. Two minutes later pacy winger Dale Fielding cut in but his cross shot went wide. New City skipper Simon Woodford glided a free kick behind the defence but the keeper saved.
Six minutes from time Turner put in a good header, but Robertson turned the ball away one-handed. He did it again in the next instant after a good move down the right, springing to fingertip Karl Brown's volley over the bar for a corner.
Manager Willcock has pulled off one win and two draws in four games at the helm and on Saturday takes his team back to one of his old stamping grounds when City travel to meet Ramsbottom United (3pm). United have shown better form of late and with both sides looking for a win a good game is in prospect.
