Battling City in big freeze leveller

North West Counties One - Warrington Town 1 Salford City 1: ON A partly frozen pitch, Salford City produced a battling performance to gain a deserved point from a difficult tie.

They were led by man of the match Rob Kelly, who had only recently returned to the club.

Salford started the first half well, coming close to opening the scoring with Graham Vaughan's solo run into the Warrington penalty area, only for his shot to be saved by O'Hanlon.

Warrington slowly came into the match and could have opened the scoring on the quarter-hour when Ian Cocks was through with only keeper Phil Melville to beat, but Melville was quick off his line to deflect the shot. Salford kept the pressure on and Kelly went close on a number of occasions only for his shots to be saved or deflected.

Then against the run of play Warrington took the lead after a looping shot was lost by the Salford defence.

The second half started well for Salford and they got their reward in the 65th minute when Kelly's free kick was parried by O'Hanlon into the path of Vaughan, whose shot levelled the score. However, although Salford dominated the rest of the game they could not get the deciding goal.

Salford City are away to Woodley on Saturday, kick-off 3pm. They meet Clitheroe at Moor Lane on Tuesday, February 25, kick-off 7.45pm.

City have been drawn at Droylsden in the Manchester Premier Cup semi-finals on Monday, March 3, kick-off 7.45 pm.
