Lions ready to meet the 'old boys'

SWINTON'S pre-league season build-up takes another step forward on Sunday when they welcome local rivals Oldham to Moor Lane.

It's not long since the Roughyeds courted top-flight rugby in Super League, and Steve Molloy's team are sure to provide a tough test for the ever-improving Lions.

The Arriva Trains Cup matches will be a good grounding for Peter Roe's young side, who are making good progress game by game.

The Lions are almost at full strength, with only Aidy Meade and Kris Smith out because of injury, although Chris Hough faces a late fitness test.

Oldham's squad includes six ex-Salford players and a former Lion - all of which should add a touch of spice to the encounter, hopefully attracting Swinton's biggest gate of the season so far to Moor Lane.

It will be well worth a visit to watch the Lions, who are already giving the opposition plenty to cope with this season.

Although the March 2 Powergen Challenge Cup fifth-round tie against Featherstone Rovers will be the biggest game this season, the Oldham clash will be a good test for the Lions in the week leading up to the tie.

As general manager Tony Griffin says: "Why not come along and join the ever-increasing band of Swinton fans? It could be the best £9 you have spent all year."
