Mattie in Latics trials

SALFORD CITY hotshot Mattie Hughes has begun two weeks of trials with Nationwide Division Three club Oldham Athletic after grabbing the attention of Boundary Park bosses.

Latics manager Iain Dowie was impressed by Mattie's performance at Boundary Park at the tail-end of last season against Ashton United in the Manchester County Premier Cup Final.

Boss Dowie has had scouts keeping tabs on the player's progress this season. With 23 goals in all competitions to date, hotshot Hughes has obviously suggested that he is worth a closer look under full-time conditions.

For the second weekend in a row Salford City were without a game when their North West Counties Division One away fixture against Newcastle Town fell victim to a frozen pitch.

This Saturday they are again scheduled to travel down the M6 for their first-ever visit to Alsager Town, who won promotion last season. City won the first meeting between the clubs at Moor Lane.

Salford make another attempt on Tuesday to play their Worthington League Cup quarter-final against Mossley at Moor Lane (7.45pm). Bad weather caused the match to be postponed two weeks ago.

Supporters should telephone the ground (792 6287) if they have any concerns about weather conditions affecting the fixture. This also applies to the midweek Manchester Premier Cup-tie against Oldham Town.

It's hoped that the link-up with Salford City Reds, who are againcontracted to play home matches at Moor Lane, will prove beneficial to the development and progression of the football club in a variety of ways, particularly in the club's ambitions of achieving a higher status.

For Salford City to move up the non-league pyramid will need not only a strong financial base but also a band of individuals willing to get involved in the running of the club. Once again an appeal is made for anyone with an interest to come forward.
