RL: National Conference One - Askam 17 Eccles 10

ECCLES were dragged well and truly into the relegation dogfight with their seventh straight defeat by Askam.

Eccles defended well for the first half, restricting the home side to just one converted try, despite having Dean Pickup sin-binned after 28 minutes.

The Moat Hall men were slow to get going after the restart and found themselves 11-0 down three minutes after the whistle.

Askam had a player sin-binned on the hour and this sparked Eccles into life with Neil Hayden setting up Steve Fearnley at dummy-half to score. Pickup converted.

The home side missed another penalty before sealing the game with a try scored against the run of play.

Man of the match Paul Raferty scored a late consolation try for Eccles, going over after receiving a pass by Hayden.

• SALFORD JUNIORS u18s, who have lost only once this season, kept up their promotion hopes with a 44-1 hammering of Orrell St James at Eccles.

• THE CLUB'S u15s showed improvement in a 36-18 defeat at Thatto Heath.
