Brave Langworthy go down in thriller

RL: North West Counties One - Langworthy 14 Wigan St Patrick's 16

A SPIRITED fightback in the last quarter couldn't save Langworthy in an exciting clash at Rabbit Hills.

The Wigan side had plenty of players to choose from as their National Conference side had been knocked out of the Challenge Cup the previous week and Langworthy were again struggling with their growing injury list.

With their side consisting of mostly Second Team players, Langworthy were certainly geared up for a tough and intense game.

The first half was fairly uneventful and even though Langworthy managed to stop St Patrick's from crossing the whitewash, they couldn't prevent the visitors taking the lead after two concurrent penalties to finish the first half 4-0.

Langworthy came out for the second half with their heads up and took the lead in the opening minutes.

Andrew Muscat scored a try from a beautiful chip off the boot of Matty Wild and Anthony Grosvenor easily converted to make it 6-4.

St Pat's then crossed the line and converted the try to regain the lead.

But Langworthy were not finished - Malc Little, man of the match and top tackler, ran on to a superb pass from Danny Grosvenor and broke through the St Pat's defence to score an outstanding try, which Grosvenor again converted.

With only four points in it Langworthy dominated the last quarter but no matter how hard they tried couldn't get to the try line.

Langworthy's consolation was a penalty kick in the dying minutes to finish what can only be described as an marvellous game of rugby.
