City cash in on keeper's exit
19/12/2002
FOOTBALL: NW Counties Worthington Cup - Warrington Town 0 Salford City 2
SALFORD'S reward for overcoming a plucky Warrington outfit is a mouth-watering quarter-final clash with Mossley at Moor Lane in early January.
City went out of the Carlsberg FA Vase to their frequent cup opponents of recent seasons and will also take them on in a league fixture the week before the cup meeting.
Saturday's game at Loushers Lane never rose to any great footballing heights and a dour first half, which saw little in the way of real scoring chances, ended all square.
Training injuries to midfield men Karl Marginson and Harvey Cunningham forced manager Andy Brown to move skipper Dave Brown from central defence into midfield and give David Chadwick an early return. Chadwick came through with flying colours and despite missing the last 19 games because of injury his aerial ability was as good as ever.
David Tickle ought to have put Warrington in front two minutes before Salford claimed the lead after an hour's play but his snap shot clipped the outside of the post.
Chris Willcock put City ahead with a low shot after a run into the box by Mattie Hughes.
Disaster struck for Town on 72 minutes when keeper Terry O'Hanlon was sent off for handling outside the penalty area when he appeared to misjudge his boundary lines.
Salford's second strike was the result of a quick counter-attack. Francis Vaughan raced through and knocked the ball wide to John Robinson, whose clever cross picked out Hughes and the ace marksman volleyed home.
With 10 minutes left it looked like a second red card for a Town keeper. With Robinson bearing down on goal O'Hanlon's stand-in appeared to handle outside the area but the referee waved play on.
The teams will meet again on Saturday when Town come to Moor Lane for a league game (3pm).
City will travel to Curzon Ashton on Boxing Day (3pm) and Mossley return to Moor Lane on Saturday, December 28, for a league match.
