Brown spells it out: The only way is up!

28/11/2002

SALFORD CITY boss Andy Brown is worried the Moor Lane board will expect thumping victories every week after a goal-filled fortnight at the club.

City have enjoyed a goal feast in the league in the last fortnight - with a 7-0 victory against Ramsbottom United and a 6-1 defeat of Congleton Town in their last two outings.

But Brown told Advertiser Sport he is just as happy seeing his team "play rubbish" and scrape a 1-0 win as long as the points keep flowing.

An excellent run of goalscoring form has seen the Moor Lane men climb into second spot in the North West Counties League - but there's only one place the club are aiming for, insists Brown.

He told Advertiser Sport: "We're in a pretty strong position nestling in behind Prescot Cables and if someone would have told me at the start of the season that we would be second at this stage I would have taken it. We have made two or three good signings over the last month and I think that's really given us some competition for places.

"I can't see why we shouldn't be aiming towards the UniBond League. Prescot and Mossley will be there or thereabouts but I think it will go down to the last 10 games like it did last season. Then it's a case of who's got the bottle."

The signing of local hotshot John Robinson, experienced midfielder Harvey Cunningham, former Kidsgrove full-back Paul Robertson and Atherton Colls centre-half Steve Wynn has boosted Salford - who now have to prove they are good enough off the pitch to gain promotion.

League inspectors are expected early next year to assess whether Moor Lane meets the grade. But Brown said with all the hard work going on behind the scenes at City there should be no problems.
