Swinton clinch play-off place

29/ 8/2002

SWINTON Lions prevailed against a side that has collected just one point from a possible 50 this season thanks mainly to a Jason Roach hat-trick.

In what coach Phil Veivers claimed was "worse than poor" win, they scraped their way past Gateshead Thunder 30-24 last night (Wednesday) to clinch a Northern Ford Premiership play-off spot.

A rare bit of cohesive play involving Dave Ellison and Mick Nanyn saw Nanyn score the clinching try of a roller-coaster match seven minutes from time.

But Gateshead threatened to register that elusive win as they fought back from 10-2 down to lead 14-10 and then tie the scores at 20-all after Swinton went ahead at 20-14.

Rob Russell and Jason Johnson crossed for Swinton's other tries while Nanyn booted three goals.
