23/ 8/2002

DARTS: THE OPENING night of the new Swinton 501 League saw a high quality contest between the Lord Nelson and the Moss Rose.

Don Greenhalgh included a 180 in a 17-darter as one of two winners for the Nelson but he was upstaged by Ian Haslam, who hit a 16-arrow game and his colleague Andy Matthews, who went out in 14 darts.

Gary Cartmell hit a 112 finish as reigning champions Rose ran out 7-2 winners.

In the Second Division Phil Naylor hit a 17-darter and Nathan Shelton a 180 as Brackley Conservative Club beat the Farmers 5-3 and a set.

Irlam & Cadishead League's Graham Smith, who recently won the individual title, will represent the league against Phil Taylor when the 10-times world champion takes on champions from all over Manchester on the log-end. Also lining up against 'The Power' at Bernard Manning's Embassy Club in Harpurhey on September 22 will be Mark West, GMBU Eccles League champion.

Swinton Ladies end their summer campaign in the Greater Manchester Super League with a home match against Stockport. They are certain to finish at least second in the table and still have an outside chance of claiming the title.

Ashley Brook A retained their Carlton Cars Salford Monday League title by beating St Boniface's Club 6-2 and a set on Monday night.
