23/ 8/2002
CRICKET: MONTON & WEASTE stayed on top of the Manchester Association Premier League with an easy win over local rivals Winton.
Second-placed Wythenshawe also won, away to struggling Westleigh, while Swinton Moorside slipped to fifth by losing at home to Hindley, who move up to third.
Winton were restricted to 143/9 as Maz Saeed starred with the ball, taking 4-19. In reply, Monton & Weaste cruised to victory by eight wickets, with Nav Din hitting an unbeaten 66 and skipper Jason Maddox 40.
Swinton Moorside's disappointing run continued at home to a resurgent Hindley St Peter's. Moorside tumbled to 79 all out, and despite three wickets for Ifti Asghar, Hindley won by seven wickets.
Wythenshawe had little difficulty in beating Westleigh. Despite Brian Blood's 87 out of 173 all out, Wythenshawe reached their target for the loss of only one wicket. Jason Rudge (81no) and Nick Horsley (64no) shared a stand of 125.
The Association's u18s were thwarted by the rain at Longsight on Sunday in the North West Colts Trophy semi-final against the Lancashire County League.
LCL were 181-9 when heavy rain ended the match, Mark Birch (Hindley) and Alex Robinson (Monton & Weaste) taking four wickets each. The match will be replayed on Bank Holiday Monday at Bury's Radcliffe Road ground, 1pm start.
This Sunday, Monton & Weaste play South West Manchester in the J C Worthington Cup Final at the Boundary, Stretford, also 1pm start.
