Late woe for Salford

29/ 7/2002

RL: Leeds 39 Salford 38 - SALFORD Reds were pipped at the post as Ryan Sheridan's late drop-goal gave Leeds Rhinos a dramatic win at Headingley.

And now the Reds will spend another anxious weekend looking over their shoulders at bottom club Wakefield.

Salford had looked well out of contention as they trailed 28-10 at the interval with only a third-minute try from skipper Darren Treacy and three goals from ex-Leeds halfback Graham Holroyd to show for their efforts.

But Holroyd's try sparked an amazing second-half turnaround as the Reds shocked their hosts with further scores from Alan Hunte, a brace from Danny Arnold and another from Malcolm Alker. Arnold's first try was his 100th in senior rugby league, his second together with Holroyd's seventh goal tied the scores at 38-38 with five minutes to go.

But Leeds regained the ball from a short kick-off and set up the position for Sheridan's clincher.
