Golden oldies in the games

GOLDEN oldies are getting their chance at Gorton Street - as Eccles host an over-40s tournament for the Commonwealth Games.

Teams from Yorkshire, the Isle of Man and Wales will travel to the tournament which will also include local lads from Broughton, De La Salle Sedgley Park and of course Eccles. MP Ian Stewart has been asked to attend the tournament - and bring his boots!

The games will be played according to over-40s rules which means players wear different coloured shorts according to age and ability and are allowed to be tackled only by someone wearing the same coloured shorts.

Host club Eccles are confident of success in the tournament and a club insider said they have the right blend of experienced over-60s and youthful under-50s to go all the way.

The festival will begin at 12.30pm on Sunday, July 28, and will run all day - unlike the competitors. Food and drinks are available all day and St John Ambulance staff will be in attendance.
