Targets elude Irlam batsmen

CRICKET: IRLAM couldn't quite muster the runs needed to beat two of the Lancashire County League's top sides at the weekend - with gallant defeats at Prestwich and Dukinfield.

On Sunday Prestwich were restricted to 194 runs thanks to some tight early bowling from the Irlam attack. Khan took 3-37 but despite good starts from Irfan Rana (37) and Ian Whitefield (34) the Irlam batsmen were unable to find the runs to usurp the home side's total.On Saturday, Irlam were beaten by reigning champs Dukinfield despite a valiant effort. In racking up a mammoth 247/3, Dukinfield pro Paul Turner made a century as Irlam's bowlers were made to toil.

In reply, Ness, Noor, Rana and Thomas all made progress without going on to make the big score required to get anywhere near the target. A major blow came when overseas star Mahmood was adjudged leg before wicket. The Irlam innings closed on a creditable 194/9, Rana being top scorer with 35.

Roe Green's good run continued with two away victories over the weekend. On their way to a nine-wicket thrashing of Sale Moor they skittled the home side for 87 and easily reached 88/1.

Paul Green had an unbeaten 78 in a three-wicket win on Sunday over fifth-placed Woodhouses. After bowling out Woodhouses for 152 Roe Green replied with 153/7.
