Woeful Winton sent crashing out

CRICKET: WINTON failed to capitalise on a commanding position against Whalley Range to crash out of the H C Smith Cup.

In a role-reversal from their league encounter one day earlier, Winton batted first and made a disappointing 115 as Faisal Zafar took 5-12. But Range were soon in big trouble at 20-5, Mo Afzal (3-9), but acting-captain Steve Glynn turned things round with good support from Sabtain Baig.

Glynn took the score to 99 when he was sixth out for 43. Three more wickets fell on the same score but Baig held his nerve to finish 29 not out as Whalley Range crept home with four balls to spare.

Monton and Weaste had a narrow win against Brooksbottom. Chasing the visitors' 157/9, Monton were grateful for Brendan Shinnick's 63 and 40 from Maz Saeed to see them home by one wicket.

Defeat in the Cup at Euxton completed an unhappy weekend for Swinton Moorside. Tony Bennett hit a fine 102 out of his side's 195 but Euxton reached their target with five wickets in hand and two overs to spare.

Elsewhere, Stretford comfortably beat Westleigh, Bolton Indians won the local derby at Bolton by three wickets, Bury beat Deane & Derby and Hindley beat Rylands.
