Irlam ace Rana hits 72 before last-ball drama

IRLAM had an unbeaten weekend in the Lancashire County League, following up a crushing defeat of Denton with an intriguing tie at Roe Green.
In Sunday's clash they rattled up 213-8 and had the home side on the rack before a seventh-wicket century partnership helped Roe Green avoid defeat. A partnership of 64 for the second wicket between Ness (37) and Mahmood (27) gave Irlam a good start, boosted by a fifth-wicket stand of 68 between Rana, whose aggressive 72 included seven fours and three sixes, and Thomas (22).
The total was reached when youngsters Burns and D Thomas ran a crucial four off the last ball without it reaching the boundary. Irlam then restricted Roe Green to 86-6 and were cruising to victory before the century stand.
The introduction of Rana into the attack brought two quick wickets, and the home side needed four runs off the last over of the match. Tight bowling ensured that with the last delivery three runs were required for victory but a scrambled two tied the scores.
Good batting by Noor, who slammed five boundaries and a six in a spectacular innings of 33, and Mahmood with 31, helped Irlam beat Denton by 48 runs. Irlam's total of 143 wasn't a massive target but with Blackman taking 5-39 and Haider 3-26 Denton were dismissed for 95.
