Diamonds win claims league title

DIAMONDS clinched the league title after a nail-biting week which saw the championship almost slip from their grasp.

A header credited to giant centre half Ged Shields in the 94th minute against fellow table-toppers Victoria A meant Diamonds only had to win on Saturday to claim the silverware. And win they did, with another magnificent solo effort from Brian Adams capping off a 3-1 win against Radcliffe-based MPG Landscapes.

But it could have been so different for the Bolton Road boys who fell behind against Victoria after 30 minutes. Over an hour of intense pressure followed until Darren McNamara's long throw hit a crowded penalty area and found its way into the net.

That meant a below-strength side stripped of full-backs Darren Birchall and Rob Harwood had to beat fifth-placed Landscapes to claim the championship. Liam Carter gave Diamonds the lead on 10 minutes but Landscapes got back into it after a defensive mix-up.

Enter Brian Adams, who settled nerves with five minutes of the half remaining. In the second half it was Adams again who wowed the crowd with a superb solo effort from half way to wrap up the game - and the title - for Ian McEvilly and Diamonds.
