Rare defeat for M&W but easy going for Moorside

30/ 5/2002

CRICKET: MONTON and Weaste suffered a rare home defeat at the hands of Stretford on Saturday in the Manchester Association Premier League.

Swinton Moorside comfortably beat Bury to go top, while Monton drop to third behind Stretford. Winton were denied by the weather and had to settle for a draw at Westleigh.

At Welbeck Road, Monton and Weaste were put in by visitors Stretford.

Brendan Shinnick made 37, in some discomfort after a blow to the hip, and Maz Saeed hit 40, as the home side progressed slowly but steadily to 120/3 with eight overs left. But the innings was left in tatters as Paul Hanrahan took five wickets in 13 balls, with the last five batsmen failing to score.

Hanrahan finished with 6-66 and Gaurav Sharma took 3-62. In reply, Mike Bishop (47) and Chris Turner (45) put on 103 for the first wicket, and despite two wickets each for Nav Din and Simon Monks, Stretford eased home by six wickets.

Swinton Moorside put visitors Bury in and soon had them in trouble. Ben Johnson and Ifti Asghar took five wickets each as Bury were dismissed for just 119, a score which could have been worse without an unbeaten 37 from number nine John Wiggans.

It took Moorside just under 20 overs to knock off the required runs. Moz Shah made exactly 50 and Tony Bennett 37 not out as Moorside won by eight wickets to go top.

Winton travelled to Westleigh where the home side batted first and made 167/9.

Opener Jim Keenan top scored with 41 and Nick Sykes hit 31, while Gulam Abbas (4-47) and skipper Dilip Patel (3-37) were the pick of the Winton bowlers.

Rain reduced the Winton innings by eight overs, which left them 14 runs short with three wickets in hand after Andy Walker had made 44 and Stuart Malone 31.
