Young Reds downed by Blue Sox

28/12/2001

TWO tries in as many minutes either side of half-time helped Halifax to a 28-8 victory over a young and inexperienced Salford side at The New Shay.

Salford had taken an early lead via a Lee Marsh penalty but the Blue Sox retorted with Stuart Donlan's first score when Danny Arnold fumbled Gavin Clinch's grubber.

They were 8-2 in front after 39 minutes when Clinch and Ryan Clayton created a try for new Australian recruit Colum Halpenny which Danny Tickle converted.

Ninety seconds after the restart Tickle and Jim Gannon combined to send Donlan surging over for his second score of the evening.

Salford hit back when the impressive Ian Watson fashioned a try for Mike Wainwright which Marsh improved but the Blue Sox clinched matters with two tries in the last 10 minutes.

Sean Penkywicz was the first to Clinch's kick after Johnny Lawless, Andy Hobson and Clayton had all made inroads into the Salford defence.

Another cute pass from man-of-the-match Clinch then sent Shayne McMenemy crashing over. Clinch converted both.
