Reds remember Eynon Hawkins

20/12/2001

THE WILLOWS was in mourning this week for former player Eynon Hawkins, who has died aged 81.

Born in Llanharan, South Wales, in 1920, he played rugby union for local clubs Bridgend and Glamorgan.

At the outbreak of the Second World War, he enlisted in the Royal Navy and went on to receive the Albert Medal (later revoked to the George Cross) for saving the lives of members of his crew after their boat had been torpedoed en route to the West Indies in 1943.

He arrived at The Willows in 1948, playing 98 games and scoring four tries before leaving in 1952 to enjoy spells at Rochdale and Belle Vue.

Hawkins played six times for Wales and was capped by Great Britain, while also holding down a job in a Salford mine.

Salford City Reds spokeswoman, Carolyn Derbyshire, said: "It's always sad when someone who has been a faithful servant to the club passes away."
