Steve sticks with talented youngsters

20/12/2001

SALFORD coach Steve McCormack is putting his faith in the club's young stars for the Boxing Day clash with old rivals Halifax Blue Sox.

The Reds travel to the New Shay for their first pre-season outing without new Aussie signings Corvo, Treacy and Gibson - who are still getting used to life in the UK.

Instead, McCormack has plumped for a side packed full of potential young stars, including Danny Arnold and Michael Platt on either wing and Lee Marsh, Danny Barton and John Clough on the bench.

"The main aim is to see how the young players cope," the coach told Advertiser Sport. "This is a very good side, with experienced players like Hancock, Holroyd and Nicol in there to balance things up."

New boys Ian Watson and Darren Shaw are also set to take their Reds bow. Local lad Watson starts at scrum half, with Shaw in the front row at hooker.

The team in full is: Broadbent, Arnold, Hancock, Littler, Platt, Holroyd, Watson, Driscoll, Shaw, Baynes, Highton, Nicol, Wainwright; subs - Clough, Marsh, Barton, Stevens.
