Lions need time to gel: Humphries

13/12/2001

TONY Humphries is confident that his Swinton side can put Sunday's disappointing defeat by Hull KR behind them and get their Premiership campaign on track at Rochdale.

The Lions travel to local rivals Rochdale this weekend for one of their toughest tasks of the season. But the Swinton supremo knows that if his side gels then two points are well within their reach.

"There were a lot of plus points from the Hull game," he said. "The lads put in a determined effort and didn't let their heads drop, even when Hull scored two tries in the second half.

"But we have got to work on our defence out wide and on moving the ball quicker."

Humphries had particular praise for props Andy Leatham and Lee Hansen, who he kept on for most of the match at Gigg Lane.

"Sometimes it seems pointless to pull a lad off when he's just got into his stride, and then put him on again cold 20 minutes later. Both Lee and Andy didn't want to come off on Sunday and I thought their fitness, considering it was our first game, was excellent."
