PROP Mark Corvo expected to sign for Reds.
Corvo coup could give Reds the edge
6/12/2001
SALFORD City Reds have unveiled the secret weapon they think can give them the edge in Super League 2002.
Top fitness coach Alex Corvo will touch down in Britain at the weekend to join the Reds' coaching staff, and coach Steve McCormack reckons this could be a major coup for the club.
He told Advertiser Sport: "He's definitely one of the best there is.
"Every club in Super League is looking for an edge - looking to do something different, and we think Alex can do that for us."
Aussie Corvo, who leaves his post as fitness coach at Mel Menninga's Canberra Raiders, could join his brother Mark at the Willows.
The 27-year-old prop is expected to sign for the Reds by the end of the week. He should be joined by another Aussie - Northern Eagles second rower Greg Ebrill.
McCormack said: "We have sent the contracts out, a couple of things need to be ironed out but they should happen soon.
"They are two quality players we targeted about six weeks ago.
"It has taken a while to get them, but now we will have a completely reshaped pack with Darren Treacy, David Highton and Warren Jowitt already with us."
Mark Corvo played several seasons in the NRL with Canberra and Adelaide Rams, before Brisbane Broncos brought him to their star-studded squad.
Injury restricted him to just eight appearances, but along with 24-year-old Ebrill - known for his consistency - McCormack thinks the new blood could give his side what they lacked last season.
He said: "I think we had to improve all over, but I said that I wanted a bit more going forward and a bit more impact - and I think we've got it now."
Meanwhile, Salford have been handed a home tie against Hull for their opening Super League game on Sunday March 3.
They follow this up with away trips to St Helens on Friday March 8 and Wakefield on Saturday March 23, then return to the Willows on Good Friday to battle old-foes Warrington.
