Action from De la Salle v Woolpack
Salle show their class
25/10/2001
THE MANCHESTER County FA Sunday Amateur Cup took up the attention of 15 Eccles Sunday League sides last weekend, with nine progressing through to the third round.
At Duncan Mathieson, top flight outfit De la Salle held off a gutsy fight by Second Division form side Woolpack to claim a 3-1 win.
Elsewhere, Church Inn and Charlestown came head-to-head in an all-Eccles clash with the latter triumphing 5-1. Lightoaks knocked out Waterloo Social 6-5 and Maccabi put paid to Blazing Rag's hopes 3-2.
Finn M'Couls were another Premier side that experienced the quality of lower league opposition - this time against Division Two team Pendleton RBL, who they edged past 2-1.
Tiger Moth had a more emphatic win, 5-0 against Blue Bell, with Askew netting a hat-trick. Yewtree won a ding-dong affair 8-6 against Taylors from the Salford League, while GM Salford Lads repeated the feat with a 1-0 win over Kersal - Wallis the scorer.
The closest game of the round was between Folly and Cyns, the Swinton side taking the tie 4-2 on penalties after a 4-4 draw. Swinton, meanwhile, beat Spread Eagle 5-2 and Ashley Brook versus Thorp ended scoreless.
In the Margaret Piggott Memorial Trophy first round, Boathouse had to reply on the lottery of spot kicks to get past Barge Inn, Their 4-2 success from 12 yards came after a thrilling four apiece stalemate.
The shock of the day, though, was reserved for the Premier Division, where champions Catholic Club went down 2-0 at home to Queensway Celtic.
The Rabbit Hills side, who themselves held the title for two consecutive years from 1996, had let-offs when Club rattled the woodwork, but were otherwise good value for the three points.
Egerton Arms, now top of the table by two points from Finns, were held to a 2-2 draw by Armitage Social at Cleavleys.
Parkwyddn are still without a point in Division One. Their latest failure came at home to Weaste Villa, who triumphed 3-1.
HISC recovered from losing to league leaders Hollins the previous week to hammer Barton Town 10-1, while Brown Cow beat Salford 5-2 on the road.
But it is Hollins who are still in command at the top after a Tony Cook brace, plus a strike from in-form Anthony Norcross, made sure of a 3-1 win at Walkden Cricket.
